The Importance of
Bunny Slippers

The second phase of the Future of Small Business
Report is out, and the findings aren't all that
surprising (at least, to us). But then, we've been
doing this for over 10 years.
Aptly titled "Phase Two - The Connected World of
Entrepreneurs", the report looks closely at the
technologies and trends that will cause change
in the small business sector and help to more
fully empower it in the global economy. The
report, to summarize the findings, says that
connectivity, wireless networks, and mobile
communications and computing are removing the
boundaries of distance or locale, allowing
entrepreneurs the flexibility to do business
virtually anywhere.
The report was developed by Intuit and
The Institute for
the Future, an independent nonprofit research
group which "works with organizations of all kinds
to help them make better, more informed decisions
about the future". The purpose of the report is
discuss the things that will impact the small
business market over the next 10 years; identifying
and analyzing issues and trends of various types and
forecasting their impact on the small business
community.
There are a few imperatives discussed in depth in
the report. One such finding focuses on the
adoption of technology by the small business, which
is traditionally slow to fully adopt and utilize new
technologies.
The report finds that small businesses "will need to
aggressively use new technologies to create, build,
and market their products and services. Small
businesses that fail to embrace technology will be
under increasing competitive pressure from more
technologically savvy firms".
"The connected
world:
small business management on my time, on my terms".
The "digital infrastructure will allow greater
flexibility around when, where, and how work is
done, allowing small business managers to run their
businesses on their time and on their own terms."
Here's where the bunny slippers come in. The
technology is available now to allow business owners
and managers to get the information they need to
make decisions and get work done no matter where
they are. The report further stresses the point
(home or vacation = bunny slippers!) by
saying that "the adoption of these new technologies
will allow greater flexibility about when, where,
and how work is done. Being onsite will become much
less important. Vacation homes and automobiles will
double as offices, and increased flexibility will
make participation in family activities easier."
The Intuit report clearly reveals the importance
of technology to the small business operating in
today's Internet economy. Remote access, mobile
technology, and online application services can
help the business to improve their
competitiveness, increase their ability to meet
customer demands, and reduce IT management and
related operating costs - these are the drivers
which incent the business to adopt. The
improvements in the work-life balance are the
benefits that are a little harder to quantify.

Keeping Up
With QuickBooks
QuickBooks 2008 products are now rolling out in the
e-Accounting datacenters. You can subscribe to
hosting for QuickBooks Pro or Premier Accountant in
the shared farm, or Pro, any Premier "flavor", and
Enterprise in custom environments.
If you're currently running QuickBooks 2005 versions
with us, be prepared to upgrade your licensing and
hosting service in the next several months.
