  Information Security Management

According to the 19th Annual Top Technology Initiatives survey by the AICPA, information security management is expected to continue to have a powerful influence over business in 2007. In fact, this is the fifth consecutive year where the survey identified Information Security as the technology initiative expected to have the greatest effect in the coming year. It is interesting to note that many of the top issues are centered on security, with Identity and Access Management, Privacy Management, Securing and Controlling Information Distribution, IT Governance, and Mobile and Remote Computing making the list of top 10 initiatives. With the rising popularity of Internet-based business services and the markets ever-increasing requirement to support a remote and mobile workforce, concerns over data and transport security will likely continue to be a focus of the IT industry.

  Application Hosting Provides SaaS Benefits

On January 25, 2007, Network World published an article stating, in part, that "User satisfaction with software as a service (SaaS) is starting to slip, but customer interest in this method of outsourcing IT functions is continuing to grow". The article goes on to state that "the latest survey clearly shows that SaaS will become a dominant force in 2007".

This article identifies what we know to be somewhat of a problem with the SaaS (software-as-a-service) application model: one size does not fit all. Evidence of this is seen with the Salesforce.com model, where the multi-tennant application is experiencing a few growing pains in terms of bringing customized application services to the client base. Salesforce is attempting to solve the problem with their appXchange, where developers can create add-ons, extensions, and new applications to work within the Salesforce.com framework. The only issues here are time and money. No biggie.

The applicaton hosting service, also in the SaaS category, offers the use of familiar, integrated applications. By hosting the market-leading business applications in their native environment (Windows), integrations and extensions that are already developed and proven can be utilized. This offers you, the user, the richness and functionality you have come to expect from your business software, but affords you the additional benefits of fully-managed IT service and anytime, anywhere access.

The old stand-bys are Lavasofts AdAware (download at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and SpyBot Search and Destroy (available at http://www.spybot.info/) both free, and both easy to use. Because they use different methods to find the bad stuff, each will catch malware that the other misses, so I usually run them one after another. For more serious infestations I like Ewido, also known as AVG Anti-Spyware, or AVGas (http://www.ewido.net/en/) in combination with Mischel Securitys Trojan Hunter (http://www.misec.net/). Ewido has ongoing protection, much like an anti-virus software, which expires after 30 days, but the scanner continues to be functional. Trojan Hunter is a straight 30 day trial, and must be purchased or removed afterward or it will drive you nuts with reminders.
